BCS Reshuffle Redeux
Last week, I briefly discussed a new hypothetical that could be a nice, healthy shot in the arm of a dying BCS corpse.
Long story short, the best non-BCS team at the end of the season replaces the worst BCS team. It’s that simple.
A earlier example would be that when Utah beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, they proved to be the best non-BCS last season. If the George rule was in effect, they would have been placed into the Pac 10, and Washington would have been bumped down to the Mountain West, where they would be stuck in the same limbo Boise State has to deal with, until they can scratch to the top of the non-BCS mountain.
Here’s what happened last week….
BCS BOUND:
Finding the best non-BCS team is pretty easy to figure out. The BCS standing basically do all the work for you. I’ll keep this list up though, in case the BCS system goes retarded for a week.
1.)TCU-
Key Victories- Clemson, BYU
Losses- N/A
Next Opp. - #16 Utah.
San Diego State played the role of sacrificial lamb this week, and TCU did their part by beating them 55-12. TCU will play in what is arguably the greatest game in TCU history on Saturday night against Utah, as they try to prove they deserve a #4 national ranking. Are you going to the game? Great, I’ll see you there.
2.)Boise State-
Key Victories- Oregon
Losses- N/A
Next Opp.- Idaho
Poor Boise. Stuck in WAC limbo, they don’t have a chance of passing TCU unless the Frogs lose, plain and simple. Boise squeeked out a ten point victory over Louisiana Tech this weekend, and look to show a little more dominance over a surprising 4-2 Idaho team.
3.) Houston
Key Victories- Oklahoma State, Texas Tech
Losses- UTEP
Next Opp. - Central Florida
Houston won a closer game against Tulsa than Boise State did. It took a borderline miracle tied with a 50 yard field goal to beat them. Regardless of the fourth quarter excitement the Cougars gave this week. They are only on the list as a hypothetical alternate in case Boise and TCU both start losing.
BCS BANISHED
1.) Washington State
Key Losses- Hawaii
Victories- SMU
Next Opp.- UCLA
After losing 48-7 against Arizona, Washington State can rest assured their spot at the front of the line is secure for now. There is a slight glimmer of hope for the Cougs, however. UCLA is 1-5 in conference play and their only win was this past weekend over a terrible Washington team who only lost to the Bruins by one point.
2.) Vanderbilt-
Key Losses- Mississippi State, Army
Victories- Western Carolina, Rice
Next Opp.- Kentucky
The Commodores were not expected to leave this week after playing the Florida. Kentucky is a middle of the road team, Vandy has little chance.
3.) Virginia
Key Losses- William & Mary, Duke
Victories- North Carolina, Indiana, Maryland
Next Opp. – Boston College
After an embarrassing, fifty point loss to Miami, Virginia is left with only one more realistic chance at another victory. That chance is this weekend against BC.
In The Hunt- NC State, Maryland, Baylor, Colorado, Illinois, Purdue, Syracuse, Louisville.
